Have you been downtown to the new Bartlett Square? It now allows vehicle traffic along Main Street in both directions. Some people like it, some don’t. It wasn’t always the Pedestrian Mall.I’ve seen downtown go through many changes over the years, and remember the area when my father would take me with him to his
office downtown. I remember running through the connecting tunnels, movies at the Rialto and Orpheum theaters, chicken fried steak at Nelson’s, ice-cream milk shakes at Vandever’s grill, and of course coneys at Jim’s. Those days were always filled with adventure.I would love to see downtown recapture that spirit, and maybe the new Centennial Green at 6th and Main can play a part. It has a couple of fountains that bookend a nice swath of green space. I haven’t seen any park benches, but I don't think it's been officially opened to the public yet. I hope the city will encourage regular outdoor activities throughout the week. Maybe I'll see you there.
